Netflix has come up with a live-action film adaptation of the manga City Hunter that follows marksman and Playboy Ryo Saeba who investigates his partner’s death with the help of the deceased’s sister. The Japanese film features some vibrant and colorful visuals which have certainly made the curious about the filming locations of City Hunter. So here are all the places where the Netflix movie was filmed.

Tokyo, Japan

City Hunter was entirely filmed in Tokyo, the capital of Japan. The premise of the film is set in Shinjuku City, a special ward of Tokyo, and the production crew made use of the same city to shoot prominent scenes of the movie. The city is known for its vibrant atmosphere and diverse attractions. One notable feature is its towering skyscrapers, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, which offers panoramic views of the city.

City Hunter Filming Locations

Shinjuku is also famous for its lively entertainment and nightlife scene, with countless bars, restaurants, and clubs. Additionally, it boasts one of the busiest train stations in the world, Shinjuku Station, serving millions of commuters daily and connecting various parts of Tokyo and beyond. Another famous thing in the city is its extensive retail options, from high-end department stores to quirky boutiques and electronic shops. The district is also home to Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, a serene oasis amidst the urban hustle.

Some sequences of City Hunter were filmed in Kabukicho, an entertainment district in Shinjuku. The region is known as the “Sleepless Town” due to its bustling atmosphere.  Filled with host and hostess clubs, love hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs, Kabukicho always buzzing with activity. Initially meant for a kabuki theater back in the late 1940s, the name Kabukicho stuck around even though the theater never came to be.

The area used to have historic landmarks like the Shinjuku Koma Theater, which has now been replaced by modern buildings like the Toho Shinjuku Building, which includes the popular Toho Cinemas Shinjuku and Hotel Gracery Shinjuku. The district’s largest cinema, the Tokyu Milano-za, closed in 2014 to make room for the towering Tokyu Kabukicho Tower, which opened in 2023. Apart from City Hunter, some other notable films and TV shows have also been filmed in Shinjuku City including Kill Bill: Vol. 1, Lost in Translation, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Drive My Car, Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, Like Father, Like Son, Good Advice, Midnight Diner, and We Couldn’t Become Adults.
