Move over Don Corleone! It’s time for “Don Poorleone”! This new nickname has been given to ex-President Donald Trump by Twitter aka X, and social media is having a field day relishing all the memes and jokes made about the poor (pun not intended) politician and businessman.

The hashtag #DonPoorleone is now trending on X with thousands of tweets mocking the former president and calling him a spoof of Don Corleone aka Vito Corleone, the legendary character played by Marlon Brando in The Godfather. Coincidentally or rather not, the trend has gained momentum on the 52nd anniversary of the release of the cult classic film, i.e. March 24th.

Donald Trump Gets Labelled Don Poorleone on Twitter

The whole fiasco has stemmed from Trump’s recent financial struggles. The 77-year-old politician is charged with a $454 million penalty for faking his net worth to secure favorable loan agreements. He has also been asked to pay $83.3 million in a defamation lawsuit. So overall, the potential presidential candidate owes over half a million dollars. Things looked so bad that his team started asking for donations from one million of his backers for his presidential campaign on March 21st.

While Trump might be having a hard time financially, social media decided to turn the situation on its head and sparked a meme fest out of it. Since the business tycoon is also accused of behaving like a mob boss, people came up with the nickname Don Poorleone for him. While the name was first coined in 2022, it blew up on March 21st this year after a tweet by the user @TheJackGreen.

Another X user, @TimHannan used the nickname in his tweet on March 24th, and it went viral in no time. “It would be a shame, it really would, if Trump’s new nickname Don Poorleone doesn’t stick,” wrote Hannan. The tweet has so far garnered more than a million impressions.

Hilarious Tweets on Don Poorleone

As the name caught on, more and more users started tweeting about it and #DonPoorleone started trending on X. “I made an offer everyone refused,” mocked a user. While another funny tweet read, “Why do you come and see your Confather on the day before his $500M bond hearing?”

“I’m gonna make you an offer you can’t refuse.  I’m gonna sell you a casino that cost 275 million to build for 38 million because I’m broke – Don Poorleone 2011,” wrote another. A user also tweeted, “I don’t know who came up with #DonPoorleone, but they should be buried underneath a mountain of magnificent mini-muffin baskets and Edible Arrangements right now. That may be the greatest hashtag of all time.”

Interestingly, this is not the first time when Donald Trump has been linked in a way to Don Corleone. In July 2023, Chris Christie, the former Governor of New Jersey, compared Trump and his allies with the Corleone family from The Godfather, stating that they are just like that crime family, though “with no experience.” “It’s pretty brazen. These guys were acting like the Corleones with no experience,” said Christie.

Will Trump come out of his financial crunch or will he continue to be labeled as Poorleone, only time will tell. Meanwhile, we leave you with some more hilarious tweets in the trend:
