The thriller drama film revolves around a young Sámi woman who struggles to defend her indigenous heritage amidst threats like xenophobia and climate change. Ever since the trailer came out, audiences have been in awe of the wonderful filming locations where Stolen was shot, from lush green valleys to serene rivers and snow-clad streets. Norrbotten County, Sweden
Stolen was entirely filmed in the Sápmi cultural region, specifically in Norrbotten County, Sweden. The cast and crew were spotted filming various sequences in Vittangi, a village in the Kiruna Municipality of Norrbotten County. The locality is famous for its mesmerizing natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Vittangi holds significance as a center for Sami culture, the indigenous people of the region. Since the premise of Stolen is set against the backdrop of the same culture, it made sense to film the majority of the film there.
The village hosts activities like reindeer herding and duodji and offers unique Sami cuisine. Vittangi is sparsely populated. As per the census of 2010, the village had only 784 inhabitants. Founded by Henrik Mickelsson Kyrö in 1674, the village faces sub-zero temperatures for more than half of the year. In February 1985, the village became the coldest place in Scandinavia having a mean temperature of −27.2 °C.
Apart from Vittangi, the cast and crew of Stolen were also spotted filming some scenes in Övre Soppero village in the Kiruna Municipality. The locality is known for its stunning natural landscapes and vibrant indigenous culture. Like Vittangi, Övre Soppero is also a center of Sami culture. However, the village is even less populated, having only 201 inhabitants in 2010.
Norrbotten County features stunning Arctic landscapes, including expansive forests, crystal-clear lakes, and picturesque mountains. One of the prominent features of Norrbotten County is its Arctic climate, which provides unique experiences such as the mesmerizing Northern Lights during winter nights and the Midnight Sun in the summer months.
The county also offers a wide range of outdoor activities, including hiking, skiing, fishing, and wildlife watching. Additionally, Norrbotten County hosts various cultural events and festivals throughout the year, showcasing its vibrant local communities and their traditions. However, the county has not hosted the production of any big films or shows earlier due to its harsh climate, which makes filming a bit difficult for the cast and crew.
