And we went digging about who she is. So here it is. The real story of Mary from My Lady Jane.

Mary from My Lady Jane Real Story

The character of Mary in the show My Lady Jane has been inspired by the life of Mary I of England. She earned the name ‘Bloody Mary’ from her opponents for being aggressive against her protestant opponents. As in My Lady Jane, Mary I was responsible for overthrowing Lady Jane Grey on 19th July 1553. As per the line of succession, Mary was supposed to become the Queen after the death of King Edward but her anti-reform stance made Edward choose his protestant cousin Jane Grey instead. Mary I who was going to be arrested planned her survival and dominance by fleeing to the East Angles where she assembled an army of people who were politically inclined to her thought process. She then overthrew Jane Grey and executed her later. In My Lady Jane, her hatred for the protestants has been expressed in the form of Ethians who are humans that turn into beasts.

Who did Mary from My Lady Jane marry?

Mary I married Philip II of Spain. We see in the final episode of the show that Phillip has sent a proposal for Mary that she accepts dumping Lord Seymour and going for a match that is more suitable for her in a way that would allow her to produce an heir that is non-Ethian. In reality Mary I married Phillip after he was widowed. The marriage took place in 1554 but did not turn out to be a happy one as Mary I suffered from multiple false pregnancies ultimately dying in 1558, possibly of Uterus cancer caused due to her desperation for her heir. She was desperate as she did not want her protestant sister Elizabeth to be the next queen.
