With the release of Amar Singh Chamkila on Netflix, there has been a rise in the audience’s curiosity about the personal life of the late singer. During his short life, Chamkila got married twice, first to a woman named Gurmail Kaur, and then to his singing partner Amarjot Kaur. Who are Chamkila’s Children and Where are they Now?
Amar Singh Chamkila got married to Gurmail Kaur when he was 18 years old. The two welcomed a daughter first, but unfortunately, she could not survive for long. The couple then went on to have a son, but as fate would have it, they lost him too. Finally, Chamkila and Gurmail welcomed two daughters one after the other: Amandeep Kaur and Kamaldeep Kaur.
Chamkila had his second wedding in 1983 without divorcing his first wife, when he got married to Amarjot Kaur. The couple shared a son together, Jaiman Chamkila. The kid was only three years old when both his parents were killed, and he was orphaned. On the other hand, Amandeep was 4 years old when her father left the world.
Now, Amandeep is married and takes care of her ailing mother, Gurmail Kaur, who still resides in Chamkila’s ancestral village, Dugri, in Ludhiana, Punjab. In an interview, Amandeep revealed that life has been difficult for her ever since the demise of her father. While her mother has been facing health issues for quite some time, the family also faced a financial crunch. Speaking about her father’s career, Amandeep said that her favorite song from his albums is “Pehle Lalkare Naal.”
Kamaldeep Kaur, on the other hand, pursued music for some time, just like her father. Some of the songs that she sang included lyrics written by Chamkila. In 2022, she got married and moved to Canada. Like Kamaldeep, Jaiman also followed in his father’s footsteps and has made a career in music. In an interview, Jaiman talked about the memories he has of his parents and said that as both of them were busy with their shows, he spent most of his time at his maternal grandparents’ home. He also remembers how his parents used to take him to showrooms to buy clothes, and how the family used to visit temples. The singer recalls that at the time of his parent’s death, he was too young to understand the tragedy that had taken place.
The half-siblings, along with Gurmail Kaur, organize a fair every year on Chamkila’s death anniversary in Dugri to celebrate his life and career. A number of fans attend the event, along with some singers and performers. The family also plans to organize an even bigger event now that more people have come to know about Chamkila’s story through Imtiaz Ali’s film.
