Fans of American Rust were left disappointed when the show was canceled after just one season by Showtime. But Amazon came to the rescue and picked up the show, leading to its revival. Now the second season of the series, titled American Rust: Broken Justice, is finally releasing on Prime Video after a wait of almost three years.

Western Pennsylvania
Like the first season, American Rust season 2 was also filmed in Western Pennsylvania, specifically in the city of Pittsburgh. The filming of the season took place from November 2022 to May 2023. A number of scenes were taped at the 31st Street Studios, located at 77 31st St, Pittsburgh. The first season of the show was also primarily filmed in the same studio.
Located in Pittsburgh’s historic Strip District near Lawrenceville and downtown, 31st Street Studios is conveniently close to major spots like Pittsburgh International Airport and universities. The vast 300,000 sq ft complex serves various purposes including film production, events, and research, making it a versatile hub for diverse activities.
The Duquesne City Hall in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area once again doubled as the Fayette County Courthouse in the show. The hall is situated at the South Second Street in Duquesne. Additionally, the scenes involving Roarke College were actually shot at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, 616 North Highland Avenue. Founded in 1794, the Presbyterian graduate seminary features a large theological library.
Some sequences of the 10-episode season were filmed at Elizabeth Pharmacy Hazelwood, located at 5041 Second Avenue. Other filming locations from the city include Aspinwall Riverfront Park, Bryant Street Market, and Highwoods Cemetery, situated at 2800 Brighton Road. Furthermore, some second-unit production reportedly also took place in Donora, a borough in Washington County, around 20 miles from Pittsburgh.
Viewers can see the Abandoned St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Donara in one of the sequences. Donara is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, boasting breathtaking landscapes and majestic mountains that draw visitors from far and wide. Additionally, Donara is famous for its vibrant cultural heritage, with traditional festivals, music, and cuisine that showcase the region’s rich history.
Pittsburgh stands out as an ideal filming location due to its diverse scenery, blending urban landscapes with historic architecture and natural beauty. Its proximity to major cities and transportation hubs like Pittsburgh International Airport makes it convenient for production crews. Moreover, the city offers a range of incentives and resources for filmmakers, coupled with a supportive local community.
Hence, the city has earlier hosted the filming of movies like The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Dark Knight Rises, The Next Three Days, The Fault in Our Stars, The Avengers, Love & Other Drugs, Out of the Furnace, Jack Reacher, Won’t Back Down, I Am Number Four, and She’s Out of My League.
